HOW CAN I KNOW WHAT KIND OF WIG IS BEST FOR ME?

This is a difficult question to answer in a general way. The best way to know is to educate yourself on what is available for you. Our customer service department will be happy to help you learn what you need to know. Things to consider include the following: the reason why you are considering wearing a wig, how often you will wear it, how long you will need or want to wear it, whether you are wanting to simulate your current style or are considering a change in style and or color, your ability to maintain a wig’s appearance, and last, but not least, how much money you have to invest in a wig. Only you can know what is best for you. Belk Wigs wants you to be able to make an informed decision so that you will be satisfied with your choice.

IS A CUSTOM MADE WIG NECESSARY FOR ME?

Fortunately, today there are manufacturers that make special size wigs so that if size is the only consideration, you may not have to go to the expense of a custom made wig. However, if you have a very small (circumference less than 19”) or very large head (circumference greater than 23 ½ ”), it may be necessary to have a wig made to fit you.  If you have special needs or concerns, then you may require a custom made wig. Email our customer service department at kbelk@belkwigs.com with your requirements and we will provide you with resources to make your decision.

Some people simply want a custom made wig. You may want a specific style of wig cap, hair type, density, length, color, texture or design. If you do not see what you want in any of the wig catalogs, then a custom or semi-custom made wig may be the option you want. Our customer service department will be happy to work with you regarding your special requirements. Email your request to kbelk@belkwigs.com.

Generally, semi-custom and custom made wigs are considerably more expensive.  The cost can be as little as $500.00; on the other hand, a fully customized wig can cost several thousands of dollars. The cost of a vacuum cranial prosthesis generally starts around $3000.00 and can be as high as $7000.00, depending on the type of hair, density and length desired.

Obviously, the decision to purchase a semi-custom or custom-made wig is a serious one that requires careful consideration. Please feel free to contact us with any questions so that we may assist you with that decision.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT HAIRSTYLE IS BEST FOR ME?

The shape of your face is the best determination of what style is right for you.

Oval Shaped Face

Some consider oval the ideal face shape. This shape can wear any design with flair and just about any style will suit this balanced shape.

 Square Shaped Face

Soften the edges of a square shaped face by directing soft wavy bangs down over your temples. Long hair should fall to, or past shoulders. If pulled up, play with wisps of hair around the face, especially at temples and at jawbone. For a short style, keep hairstyle round and soft with height at the crown. A mid-length, shag, fluff back or curly style works well with square faces.

Round Shaped Face

The goal is to create an oval appearance, lift and narrow the face.

Keep sides close to the face to promote height at the crown. Avoid straight bangs and pulling hair straight back. A gamin (boy cut), shag, or mid-length style looks great with this facial shape.

Diamond Shaped Face

Balance  this shape with fullness at the temple and bottom. A side part with wispy bangs helps to create an oval look.  Keep hair close at the cheekbones and avoid center part styles. A shag, page, mid-length or curly style will work wonders.

Rectangle Shaped Face

Width and volume soften the angles in this shape. Bangs look great when just touching the brows and help to shorten a long shaped face. Suitable short styles include the wedge design and short shag. Mid-length shags and page styles that fall at or above the shoulder also soften angles and look great.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT COLOR TO CHOOSE?

We have listed each manufacturer's wigs with their own color numbers and a description of that color to assist you with color selection. Please note that color numbers are NOT the same between manufacturers. For example, a color 27 in the Wig Pro Collection is Strawberry Blonde, whereas, Look of Love’s color 27 is a “light auburn”. Belk Wigs does not display pictures of colors, because photography and scanning processes, as well as the different settings on individual monitors, may distort or change the colors and mislead our customers. If you have a question about matching a color, please email us! The safest way to get the color that best matches your own hair is to send us a sample of your hair, or a sample from the hair replacement you are currently wearing. Exchanging a wig simply for color reasons can be costly to both of us, so let’s do everything possible to get it right the first time!

HOW DO I COMB AND STYLE MY WIG?

All wigs have one thing in common; the hair is fragile and will come out if it is pulled on by using improper combs and brushes. Wide tooth combs and picks and anti-static brushes are the safest tools to use on all wigs. With that in mind, you can otherwise style and comb a human hair wig much like growing hair.

A synthetic wig is pre-styled by the manufacturer and should not require any major styling for a long time.  Simply use a pick to rearrange the hair as needed. Depending on proper care, the style set by the manufacturer will last through 6-8 cleanings. When necessary, the safest way to re-style a synthetic wig is to use plastic rollers and synthetic wig setting solutions or gels.

CAN I CHANGE THE COLOR OF MY WIG?

Care should be taken in the selection of color when buying a wig in order to avoid this service because the wig has already been dyed. A human hair wig can be colored in much the same way growing hair can be colored, as long as the color is very gentle and suitable for use on pre-dyed hair.  A professional stylist should be consulted when wanting to change the color of a human hair wig.

Synthetic wig colors can not be changed significantly. A light color can be made darker by using a color depositing mouse or a rinse and the style (curl) can be maintained fairly well. Because these are synthetic fibers, garment dyes, such as Rit, can be used, however, the dye requires very hot water to work, which will remove the curl or style, and may significantly alter the fit of the cap. This is not recommended for wigs made with monofilament caps because the cap will accept the dye and destroy the transparency.

I HAVE A WIG, SO WHY DO I NEED A PROFESSIONAL STYLIST?

Despite manufacturer’s advertisements, and regardless of cost, ALL WIGS require fine-tuning by a professional stylist. Some wigs may only need to have a few bangs cut in, or the back shaped just a little, whereas other wigs make need significant thinning. The secret to wearing a wig that does not look like a wig is having it professionally styled on your head to suit your features.

WILL MY INSURANCE COMPANY PAY FOR A WIG IF MY HAIR LOSS IS DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS?

Most insurance companies will reimburse the cost of hair replacement due to medical reasons. Unfortunately, filing a claim can be confusing and distressing. The following information is intended only to be a guide as to what the insurance company may require when you present a claim for a hair replacement option.

When it has been determined that your hair loss is, or will be, due to medical reasons, your insurance company will need to be contacted as soon as possible to learn what benefits are allowed in the policy. The policy should include a section described as “durable medical equipment”. In this section will be a list of covered medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers and “prosthesis”. Most insurance companies will list only reimbursed devices versus devices excluded from reimbursement. This information is important to know when filing a claim.

Be sure to have all the necessary insurance forms available for your physician to sign. Also, ask your physician to write a prescription and a referral for a “full cranial hair prosthesis” if you have lost all of your hair. Your physician should write the referral and prescription for a “cranial hair prosthesis” if your hair loss is not a complete loss. Review the form before sending it to assure it is signed by your physician and is complete.  Make a copy of your claim before sending it to the insurance company.

A letter of medical necessity is a good idea to send with your request for reimbursement to the insurance company. You will need to provide your physician with the name of your insurance adjuster or case manager and the address of the insurance company.

This letter should have your name, policy number, and date of birth, social security number and claim number. Your physician will need to include your diagnosis, his plan of treatment and the expected side effects of that treatment, namely the complete or partial loss of your hair. The letter also will need to include that the cranial hair prosthesis is necessary to promote your emotional well being and is not just for cosmetic reasons.

Sometimes, even when all the requirements for filing a claim are met, the claim may be denied.  In this situation, you can appeal the decision of the insurance adjuster.
